Best French Dip Sandwich Recipe

A French dip sandwich is a classic comfort food featuring tender roast beef layered onto a crusty baguette, served with a flavorful au jus for dipping. This sandwich is perfect for an easy lunch or a satisfying dinner.

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Large skillet
  • Tongs or spatula
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Baking sheet (optional)
  • Aluminum foil (optional)

Ingredients

  • For the Sandwich:
  • 1 pound thinly sliced roast beef deli-style or leftover roast
  • 4 French rolls or baguettes split lengthwise
  • 8 slices provolone Swiss, or mozzarella cheese
  • Butter for toasting the bread
  • For the Au Jus:
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Make the Au Jus:
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and thyme.
  • Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat and cook for 5-7 minutes to meld the flavors.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep warm.
  • Prepare the Sandwiches:
  • Preheat a skillet over medium heat and lightly butter the cut sides of the rolls. Toast them in the skillet until golden and crispy.
  • Layer the roast beef onto the bottom halves of the toasted rolls.
  • Melt the Cheese (Optional):
  • Place 2 slices of cheese on top of the beef in each sandwich.
  • Place the sandwiches open-faced on a baking sheet and broil in the oven for 1-2 minutes, until the cheese is melted.
  • Assemble the Sandwiches:
  • Close the sandwiches with the top halves of the rolls.
  • Serve immediately with small bowls of warm au jus on the side for dipping.
