Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • 9-inch square baking pan
  • Non-stick cooking spray or butter for greasing the pan
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted and cooled
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven:
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan with non-stick cooking spray or butter.
  • Combine Dry Ingredients:
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  • Mix Wet Ingredients:
  • In another bowl, whisk together the melted butter, honey, eggs, buttermilk, and granulated sugar until smooth and well combined.
  • Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently with a wooden spoon or spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
  • Bake the Cornbread:
  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool and Serve:
  • Remove the cornbread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Slice into squares and serve warm with additional honey and butter if desired.
